Grammar Spotlight:
The accusative case with motion verbs (going TO somewhere)
In simple terms: When you are going to a place, many place words change their ending.
How it works:
- Я иду в аэропорт. (to the airport)
- Мы летим в Москву. (to Moscow)
- Самолёт летит в Лондон. (to London)
Compare to English: English doesn’t change the word “airport” when you say “I’m going to the airport.” Russian adds a special ending (or uses “в” + changed word) to show movement toward something. It’s like the word is “putting on traveling shoes”!
Word Origins — Deep Dive: паспорт
Did you know that the Russian word паспорт and the English word passport are actually the same word? They both come from old French “passe port,” meaning “pass through the port/gate.”
This word started in medieval French, travelled across Europe during the time of kings and traders, was borrowed into English, and later arrived in Russian in the time of Peter the Great when he wanted Russians to travel to Europe. Along the way it kept almost the exact same spelling and meaning!
But be careful — this is a “friendly cognate,” not a false friend. Many Russian travel words are close to English (билет, аэропорт, багаж), which makes traveling vocabulary one of the easiest topics for English speakers.
Next time you see the English word “passport,” remember it’s cousins with the Russian паспорт — they both come from the old idea of “passing the port/gate.” That connection is your secret shortcut to remembering it forever.
Cultural Corner:
Russians love to travel by train even more than by plane. The famous Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest train journey in the world. Many Russian families take long train trips during summer holidays with lots of snacks, tea from special train glasses in metal holders (called подстаканники), and playing cards. Traveling is seen as a big adventure that brings the whole family together.
Practice Challenge:
“Pack Your Suitcase” Game (perfect for kids and adults)
- Take a real suitcase or a big bag.
- Put 5–6 objects in it while saying in Russian: “Я кладу в чемодан … (книгу, яблоко, игрушку и т.д.)”
- Then pretend you are at the airport: “Где мой паспорт? Где мой билет? Давай пройдём контроль безопасности!”
- For extra fun — draw a picture of an airplane and label it with today’s new words (самолёт, крыло, окно, пилот).
Repeat after me:
Самолёт… (pause) самолёт.
Паспорт… (pause) паспорт.
Безопасность… (pause) безопасность.
Great job! If you can say these ten words, you are already ready to travel in Russian! See you next time on Привет, Русский! 🚀
