Key Concepts

Are the trades real?
No — all Practice Investment picks are simulated. We track them as if we invested $1,000 per trade using real market open/close prices, but no actual money is involved. This is purely educational. The podcast is not financial advice. Always do your own research before investing real money.
What is a TFSA?
A Tax-Free Savings Account is a Canadian registered account where all investment gains — dividends, interest, and capital gains — are completely tax-free. In 2026, the annual contribution limit is $7,000, with cumulative room of $102,000 if you've been eligible since 2009. It's the most powerful wealth-building tool for most Canadians because you never pay tax on withdrawals.
What is an ETF?
An Exchange-Traded Fund is a basket of investments (stocks, bonds, etc.) that trades on a stock exchange like a single stock. ETFs like VFV (S&P 500), XEQT (global equities), or VGRO (balanced growth) let you diversify across hundreds of companies with a single purchase. They typically have much lower fees than mutual funds — often 0.05-0.25% per year vs 2%+ for mutual funds.
What does 'outperform index funds' mean?
Index funds like the S&P 500 (which returned ~10% annually over the last century) are the benchmark. 'Outperforming' means earning higher returns through active strategies — momentum trading, sector rotation, value picks, or options. Most active managers fail to beat the index over 10+ years, which is why we track our simulated trades honestly. The goal is education: understanding WHY strategies work or fail.
Is this show financial advice?
No. Modern Investing Techniques is for educational and entertainment purposes only. We discuss strategies, analyze markets, and track simulated trades to help you learn — but we are not licensed financial advisors. Your financial situation is unique. Before making investment decisions, consider consulting a fee-only financial planner, especially for tax-advantaged account strategies (TFSA/RRSP/FHSA).
