How the Practice Investment Model Works

1
Monday: Pick
AI analysis selects one investment for a simulated weekly hold. Buy at Monday's market open. $1,000 per trade.
2
Tue-Thu: Track
Daily updates on position progress. If the thesis is working, why. If not, what we're watching. Rare Flash Trades for exceptional catalysts.
3
Friday: Evaluate
Close at Friday's close. Report P&L vs NASDAQ. Extract the lesson. Wins and losses analyzed with equal rigour.
4
Learn & Improve
Every trade outcome feeds back into the system. Lesson rules are auto-extracted and obeyed by future episodes. The show gets smarter over time.

All trades are simulated — no real money. This is a learning exercise. Not financial advice. View investing resources →

How this show improves itself (10 active rules — each one was written by a past episode and is obeyed by future episodes)
  • LL-013 [content, Ep32, 2026-05-01] — Capturing a modest gain on the BTC flash trade validated the use of cross-asset signals for opportunistic entries, but the underperformance relative to the NASDAQ underscores the difficulty of beating broad indices on single-day volatile assets. The key adjustment is strengthening confirmation criteria to ensure the signal has substance beyond initial movement
Rule: Always verify price data from multiple providers before entering a flash trade on volatile assets like crypto
  • LL-012 [content, Ep30, 2026-04-29] — Despite the publicly confirmed positive catalyst, CLDX moved against us because expectations had already been priced in and sector momentum was absent. This reinforces the process gap we keep encountering with binary events and the critical need for multi-source verification to judge true alpha versus the NASDAQ
Rule: Always verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-011 [content, Ep29, 2026-04-28] — Even with a publicly confirmed positive catalyst, the position moved against us because expectations had already been priced in and sector momentum was absent. This reinforces the process gap we keep encountering with binary events and the critical need for multi-source verification to judge true alpha versus the NASDAQ
Rule: Always verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-010 [content, Ep28, 2026-04-27] — Despite the publicly confirmed positive catalyst, CLDX moved against us because expectations had already been priced in and sector momentum was absent. This reinforces the process gap we keep encountering with binary events
Rule: Always verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-009 [content, Ep27, 2026-04-24] — Even with a publicly confirmed binary catalyst, the position moved against us, likely because expectations were already elevated and broader sector momentum was lacking. This reinforces the critical process gap in data verification
Rule: Always verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-008 [content, Ep26, 2026-04-23] — Despite the positive clinical catalyst the position moved against us, underscoring that binary events can still produce losses when expectations are already elevated. This reinforces the need to verify pricing and liquidity data from multiple providers to accurately judge whether any simulated trade is generating alpha versus the NASDAQ Composite
Rule: Always verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-007 [content, Ep25, 2026-04-22] — Even when a binary catalyst such as accelerated enrollment is publicly confirmed, the market can still price in expectations ahead of the announcement and rotate out on the news, especially when broader sector momentum is absent. This reinforces the need to verify real-time order flow and liquidity before declaring any catalyst-driven trade closed
Rule: Verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-006 [content, Ep23, 2026-04-20] — The absence of reliable pricing data for LUCID blocked accurate tracking of whether the robotaxi thesis outperformed the NASDAQ, exposing a gap in execution
Rule: Verify data availability from multiple providers before declaring a weekly hold closed
  • LL-001 [content, Ep21, 2026-04-17] — The bid-ask-spread / order-flow-slippage lesson was taught in 6 of 8 recent episodes with nearly identical framing. Listeners tuned out after the third repeat.
Rule: Never re-teach bid_ask_spread or order_flow_slippage within their 45-day cooldown. If the only interesting mechanic today is a stale one, pick a different mechanic — freshness beats any single lesson.
  • LL-002 [risk, Ep21, 2026-04-17] — The last 10 picks skewed 35% toward precious metals (Fortuna, SSR, West Red Lake) with zero flag raised on air. A real portfolio would have rebalanced.
Rule: Cap any single sector at 30% of the trailing 10-trade window. When the sector-concentration warning fires, the Practice Investment MUST pick a different sector that episode.

SIMULATED trades for educational purposes only. No real money is involved. This is NOT financial advice.

Key Concepts

Are the trades real?
No — all Practice Investment picks are simulated. We track them as if we invested $1,000 per trade using real market open/close prices, but no actual money is involved. This is purely educational. The podcast is not financial advice. Always do your own research before investing real money.
What is a TFSA?
A Tax-Free Savings Account is a Canadian registered account where all investment gains — dividends, interest, and capital gains — are completely tax-free. In 2026, the annual contribution limit is $7,000, with cumulative room of $102,000 if you've been eligible since 2009. It's the most powerful wealth-building tool for most Canadians because you never pay tax on withdrawals.
What is an ETF?
An Exchange-Traded Fund is a basket of investments (stocks, bonds, etc.) that trades on a stock exchange like a single stock. ETFs like VFV (S&P 500), XEQT (global equities), or VGRO (balanced growth) let you diversify across hundreds of companies with a single purchase. They typically have much lower fees than mutual funds — often 0.05-0.25% per year vs 2%+ for mutual funds.
What does 'outperform index funds' mean?
Index funds like the S&P 500 (which returned ~10% annually over the last century) are the benchmark. 'Outperforming' means earning higher returns through active strategies — momentum trading, sector rotation, value picks, or options. Most active managers fail to beat the index over 10+ years, which is why we track our simulated trades honestly. The goal is education: understanding WHY strategies work or fail.
Is this show financial advice?
No. Modern Investing Techniques is for educational and entertainment purposes only. We discuss strategies, analyze markets, and track simulated trades to help you learn — but we are not licensed financial advisors. Your financial situation is unique. Before making investment decisions, consider consulting a fee-only financial planner, especially for tax-advantaged account strategies (TFSA/RRSP/FHSA).
